OLIVET, Mich. – Effective immediately with the 2011-12 academic year, Olivet College will add men's and women's indoor track and field as a varsity sport, bringing the number of NCAA Division III sports offered at Olivet up to 21.
With the addition, the student-athletes will get five more weeks of practice time and compete in five indoor meets during the winter months. They will also have the opportunity to qualify for the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships each year. The 2012 meet will take place March 9-10 at the Charles Benson Bear Recreation and Athletic Center in Grinnell, Iowa.
"I am very appreciative of the administration's decision to add indoor track and field," said Olivet Head Women's Track and Field Coach Karen Lutzke. "This is just another step forward in a positive direction for our program."
"Adding an indoor season gives us an additional time for our student-athletes to train and compete," continued Olivet Head Men's Track and Field Coach Jeff Kavalunas. "It also gives us the opportunity to be better prepared for the outdoor season in the spring, especially for the league championships each May."
