ANGOLA, Ind. – Freshman Lauren Vanderhoff (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) scored the only goal, and the Olivet College women's soccer team beat Trine (Ind.) University, 1-0, today at Fred Zollner Stadium in Angola, Ind. The game marked the end of the first half of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule for the Comets.
There was not a lot of action in the first half, with neither team taking a shot until the 40th minute of play. Olivet finished the half with four shots, two were placed on-goal. Trine's only shot came with 23 seconds left before the break and it sailed high.
The Comets finally broke through in the 15th minute of the second half. On a scramble in front of the net, Vanderhoff sent a shot to the upper left corner of the goal. Meanwhile, freshman Deana Zolnoski (Macomb/Henry Ford II) stopped the only three shots she faced in the final 45 minutes.
Overall for the game, Olivet out-shot the Thunder, 9-4. Vanderhoff had two shots, and seven others each recorded one.
The Comets will play three games next week. The first is Tuesday at Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, followed by a Thursday game at Alma College. Both games start at 4 p.m. Olivet ends the week with a noon game next Saturday, Oct. 13, at home against Hope College.
