Women’s soccer team blanked by Manchester, 3-0
Three goals in a span of just under four minutes in the second half were the difference, as the Olivet College women’s soccer team fell to Manchester (Ind.) University in the second round of the 2012 O.C. Comet Cup today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – Three goals in a span of just under four minutes in the second half were the difference, as the Olivet College women's soccer team fell to Manchester (Ind.) University in the second round of the 2012 O.C. Comet Cup today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. In today's other game, Trine (Ind.) University and Milwaukee (Wis.) School of Engineering battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
After a scoreless first half, the Spartans broke through in the 67:08 mark on a goal by Amber Kent from the top of 18-yard box. Exactly one minute later, Breanna McLane knocked in a goal, where the ball wrapped around the near post and dropped into the net. Manchester ended the scoring in the 71st minute on a goal by Lillie Terrill from 10 yards out.
The Comets dominated the stat sheet, with a 20-6 edge in shots. Olivet also had all 10 corner kicks in the game. Junior Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) topped the team with five shots, while freshman Lauren Vanderhoff (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) was next with three. Freshman Devin Blue (Traverse City/Central) played all 90 minutes in goal and made two saves.
In the other game, Trine's Skyler Reed scored in the 13th minute off a corner kick. MSOE's Caitlin Liddiard answered with a goal in the 32nd minute. There was no scoring in the second half and either of the overtime frames. MSOE was declared the tournament champion based on goal differential.
The Comets are now off until next Friday, Sept. 7, when they play the host Blue Streaks in the first round of the John Carroll (Ohio) University Classic. Game time is 5 p.m.
