Julian records hat trick in 3-1 win over Albion
OLIVET, Mich. -- Junior Lizzy Julian (Mattawan) recorded a hat trick to lead the Olivet College women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Albion College today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. With the win, the Comets improve their record to 12-2-2, and the 12 wins are the third-most in school history. In addition, it is the first win for Olivet over Albion since Oct. 3, 1999.
The Comets led 1-0 at halftime behind Julian's first goal, which was scored at the 26:16 mark. Off a corner kick by freshman Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton), Julian redirected the ball into the net from inside the 6-yard box.
The Britons tied the game at 1-1 in the 53rd minute on their own shot off a corner kick. Olivet re-gained the lead just 2 minutes, 22 seconds later on a header by Julian. Senior Katie Koralewski (Sterling Heights/Stevenson) played the ball up to Winters, who crossed the ball from the right side of the field into the box, where Julian headed the ball into the net from 10 yards out.
Julian completed the hat trick by scoring a goal with 4:43 left in the game. Koralewski slotted a pass from the middle of the field to Julian at the right side, and then Julian sent a hard shot to the far post and into the goal.
For the game, the Comets doubled up Albion in shots, 20-10, including a 10-4 advantage in shots-on-goal. Julian recorded nine shots, five on-goal. Koralewski was next with four shots. Senior Alyssa Budros (Traverse City/Central) earned the win in net, collecting three saves in 90 minutes.
Olivet travels to play Adrian College Saturday at noon. The Comets will enter the game in a tie with Calvin and Alma for first-place in the MIAA standings.
NOTE: The hat trick was the second in Julian's career. She also had three goals against Finlandia University Sept. 16, 2008.
