Wrestling team defeats Trine, 31-10
The Olivet College wrestling team won 7-of-10 bouts to easily defeat Trine (Ind.) University, 31-10, tonight inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team won 7-of-10 bouts to easily defeat Trine (Ind.) University, 31-10, tonight inside The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
A random draw before the match resulted in the match starting at 133 pounds, where junior Michael Gancer (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) used a takedown in the overtime period to win, 4-2. Senior 141-pounder Kenny Richmond (Brighton) also took his opponent to sudden death. He scored a takedown and two-point near fall for an 11-7 win.
Junior 149-pounder Gage Pederson (Hastings) won by forfeit after his opponent failed to make weight. The Comets lost the 157-pound match to the NCAA Division III top-ranked wrestler. Senior 165-pounder James Myers (Monroe/Indian Creek) brought the fans out of their seats by recording a first period pin in one minute, 10 seconds.
Olivet lost another match, 9-3, at 174 pounds. At 184 pounds, sophomore Jeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) pinned his man in one minute, 29 seconds. Senior 197-pounder Logan Renas (Big Rapids) posted a 6-2 decision.
Senior heavyweight Jake Ceslick (Alpena) scored four takedowns to propel him to a 10-2 major decision win. At 125 pounds, sophomore Esteban Gonzales (Davisburg/Holly) allowed a takedown in the final 30 seconds to lose his bout, 7-5.
The Comets return to the mats next Tuesday, Jan. 22, when they wrestle at Manchester (Ind.) University at 7 p.m.
