Women’s lacrosse team beaten by Trine, 8-6
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team fell to Trine (Ind.) University, 8-6, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest this afternoon at the Fred Zollner Stadium in Angola, Ind.
The Thunder took a 1-0 lead only 34 seconds into the game. Sophomore Geri Merrell tied the game less than one minute later on a free-position goal. Trine responded with three straight goals to take a 4-1 lead. Merrell scored another goal at the 18:00 mark before the Thunder scored the final goal of the half to take a 5-2 lead at the break.
Merrell scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half to trim Olivet's deficit to 5-4. The teams traded goals to make the score 6-5 with 19:06 left in the game. Trine came back with a 2-0 run to stretch its lead back to three goals, 8-5. Merrell scored with 4:25 remaining but the Comets could not get any closer.
Merrell finished the game with five goals on seven shots. Sophomore Taylor Guarnaccia scored once. She and sophomore Kaylee Liddle each took five shots. Olivet won 10 draw controls, with freshman Ana Gomez recording a game-high five. Sophomore Sarah Shaw played all 60 minutes in the cage and had 15 saves on 34 Thunder shots.
Olivet will play at Calvin College in their season-finale Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
