Women’s lacrosse team loses to Mount St. Joseph, 21-13
The Olivet College women’s lacrosse team fell to College of Mount St. Joseph, 21-13, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team fell to College of Mount St. Joseph, 21-13, today at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Lions led 5-3 at the 20:24 mark of the first half. The Comets scored the next four goals to go up 7-5 with 13:42 left in the half. Mount St. Joseph countered with a 5-0 run to take a 10-7 lead. The teams traded the final five goals of the half, and Olivet was only down 12-10 at the break.
After the Lions scored the first goal in the second half, the Comets scored twice to trail by only one, 13-12, with 24:13 remaining in the game. Mount St. Joseph put eight of the final nine goals on the scoreboard to earn the win.
For the game, freshman Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and senior Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) each scored four goals. Merrell also had an assist for a team-leading five assists. Freshman Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett) had two goals. Freshmen Mimi Garza (Battle Creek/Pennfield), Brittany Hayes (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and Mackenzie Inman (Union City) each scored a goal. In goal, freshman Sarah Shaw (Grand Haven) faced 42 shots and made 13 saves.
The Comets will travel to play Trine (Ind.) University Wednesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
