WEST OLIVE, Mich. – The Olivet College women's golf team placed second at the first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) playoff round today at the Wuskowhan Players Club in West Olive. If the Comets want to receive the MIAA's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championships, they are going to have to come back in similar fashion to what they did during the fall when they overcame a 15-stroke deficit to win the MIAA Championship.
The Comets finished today's round with a 345 team score, which was 21 strokes behind first-place Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. Hope was five strokes behind Olivet at 350, and Calvin was fourth at 384.
Senior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) shot an 80 to lead the Comets. Sophomore Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) was two strokes behind her with an 82. Sophomore Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) carded an 89, while sophomore Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) completed her round in 94 strokes. Freshman Jennifer Myers (Palos, Ill./Stagg) finished with a 97.
By virtue of winning the league championship, the Comets have the advantage of hosting the final two rounds next Friday and Saturday, April 27-28 on their home course, The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. After the three rounds, the school with the lowest cumulative total will receive the MIAA's automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III National Championships.
