Women’s golf team wins 2011 MIAA Championship!
With a first-place finish at the two-day MIAA Tournament, the Olivet College women’s golf team has secured the 2011 MIAA Championship! The title is the fourth in school history for the Comets and the first since 2006-2008 when they won back-to-back-to-back league championships.
Campbell is Most Valuable Golfer and Sportsmanship Award winner
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – With a first-place finish at the two-day Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament, the Olivet College women's golf team has secured the 2011 MIAA Championship! The title is the fourth in school history for the Comets and the first since 2006-2008 when they won back-to-back-to-back league championships.
In addition, senior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) has earned 2011 MIAA Most Valuable Golfer honors and was named the recipient of the MIAA Sportsmanship Award. She is also an All-MIAA selection for a fourth straight season, including a first-team pick for a second consecutive year. Joining her on the 2011 All-MIAA first-team were sophomores Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) and Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston).
Entering today's final round, Olivet trailed Hope College by six strokes. The top three Comets shot scores in the 70s, while the top three Hope golfers shot in the 80s. With that difference, Olivet was able to overcome the deficit, posting a 315 team score, which ties for the sixth best in school history, and winning the MIAA championship. Hope finished with a 331 team score.
Campbell posted a tournament best, two-round total of 150 strokes, which is the second-best, 36-hole score in Olivet history. Damico finished with a 155, the 10th-best, 36-hole score. Jones completed her two rounds in 158 total strokes. With those scores, they were 1-2-3 in the player standings and earned All-Tournament honors.
Freshman Jennifer Myers (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) and sophomore Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) each had two-day totals of 168 strokes.
Final overall team scores were Olivet at 1,981 total strokes, followed by Hope 1,991; Saint Mary's 2,045; Calvin 2,103; Adrian 2,209; Trine 2,233; Albion 2,278; Alma 2,297 and Kalamazoo 2,364.
