Women’s golf team sits in first-place after day one of own invitational
The Olivet College women’s golf team dodged the rain and sits in first-place out of 15 teams after the first round of its own invitational today at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The second round of the tournament gets under way tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
MARSHALL, Mich. – The Olivet College women's golf team dodged the rain and sits in first-place out of 15 teams after the first round of its own invitational today at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The second round of the tournament gets under way tomorrow morning with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
The Comets finished the day with a 334 team score, which is just one stroke ahead of second-place University of Saint Francis (Ind.). The rest of the top 10 teams are Calvin, 340; Hope, 342; North Central (Ill.), 352; Madonna, 354; Adrian, 367; Alma, 373; Manchester (Ind.), 381; and Trine (Ind.), 385. Calvin's Carlia Canto is the individual leader with a three over par 75.
Senior Lauren Campbell (Fenton) is third in the player standings with a 78. Her round featured 12 pars and 6 bogies. Sophomores Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) and Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) each shot an 82 to share sixth-place in the player standings. Jones topped the tournament field with three birdies (on holes 9, 11 and 18).
Sophomore Ashley Stark (Grass Lake) was 10 strokes behind with a 92. Freshman Megahn Piper (Parma/Western) was Olivet's #5 golfer, and she completed her round in 105 strokes. Freshman Jennifer Myers (Palos Hills, Ill./Stagg) played as an individual scorer, and shot a 93.
After tomorrow's round, the Comets will begin their pursuit of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship next Thursday, Sept. 15. Olivet will participate in the first league jamboree at the Zollner Golf Course in Angola, Indiana. The school with the lowest total score after four jamborees and a two-day championship tournament in October will be crowned the 2011 MIAA champion.
