Women’s basketball team falls to Lawrence Tech, 64-59
Senior SoQuitta DeShazor scored a career-high 23 points but the Olivet College women’s basketball team fell to Lawrence Technological University, 64-59, this afternoon at the Don Ridler Field House in Southfield.
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Senior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) scored a career-high 23 points but the Olivet College women's basketball team fell to Lawrence Technological University, 64-59, this afternoon at the Don Ridler Field House in Southfield.
Olivet led 4-0 before the Blue Devils went on an 8-4 run to knot the score at 8-8 with 14:55 left in the game. After another tied score at 12-12, Lawrence Tech went on a 23-10 run to take its largest lead of the opening half, 35-22, and eventually settle for a 35-27 lead at the break.
The Comets opened the second half with an 8-4 run to trail by only four points, 39-35, at the 13:56 mark. Olivet would get as close as four points on five more occasions in the second stanza but not any closer, as the Blue Devils scored their nine of their final 11 points of the game from the free throw line.
Both teams made 22 baskets and four three-pointers. The difference in the game was Lawrence Tech making 16-of-20 tosses from the charity stripe, while the Comets were 11-of-20.
DeShazor scored her 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and 3-of-5 free throws. She also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Senior Mellissa Bageris (Milford) came off the bench to score 12 points, while junior Kelsey Campbell (Olivet) had 10 points to go along with five assists and seven steals.
Allison Bicknell led Lawrence Tech with 18 points, while Jordan Strauss added 10.
Olivet returns to the court Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, when it travels to play Kalamazoo College at 1 p.m. The game is a part of a MIAA doubleheader, as the Comet men also play the Hornets after the women's game at approximately 3 p.m.
