Men’s swimming team wins three relays at MIAA Relays
The Olivet College men’s swimming team won two relays and tied for first-place in another one, as it opened the 2011-12 season today at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Relays. Hope College hosted the unscored relays at the Holland Aquatic Center.
HOLLAND, Mich. – The Olivet College men's swimming team won two relays and tied for first-place in another one, as it opened the 2011-12 season today at the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Relays. Hope College hosted the unscored relays at the Holland Aquatic Center.
The winning relays were 200 backstroke and 200 freestyle. Swimming on the 200 backstroke relay were junior Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview), junior Brock Jackson (Sturgis), sophomore Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) and freshman Brandon McShane (Southgate/Anderson), and their time was 1:40.89. The 200 freestyle quartet was sophomore Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson), senior Mike Harden (St. Johns), junior Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and Ben Aldrich, and their time was 1:27.17.
The 200 medley relay tied Kalamazoo for first-place with a time of 1:38.04. Members of the relay were junior Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett), senior Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix), Harden and Fiorillo.
Olivet's 4x100 individual medley team of Jackson, senior Austin Munn (Pinckney), freshman Phil Barone, Jr. (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and freshman Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/Unidad Educativa Colegio) was the runner-up finisher in 3:46.39.
The 200 breaststroke and 200 butterfly relays each finished in third-place. The 200 breaststroke relay consisted of Marquette, sophomore Adam Rhein (Leonard/Romeo), Mauk and Barone, and they stopped the clock in 1:52.97. The 200 butterfly relay was sophomore Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns), senior Zach Burgess (Dimondale/Holt), sophomore Tyler Russell (Bay City/Central) and Edgar. They touched the wall in 1:40.13.
The Comets will host Albion, Hope and Carthage (Wis.) for a quad meet next Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, at the Battle Creek Lakeview High School Pool. Friday's events start at 6 p.m., and Saturday's events at 11 a.m.
