Baseball team swept by Kalamazoo, 6-3 and 2-0
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Kalamazoo College, 6-3 and 2-0, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at Homer Stryker Field in Kalamazoo. The teams will complete the four-game MIAA series tomorrow with a twinbill at Olivet's Cutler Athletic Complex, beginning at 1 p.m.
In the first game, the Comets scored an unearned run in the first inning. The Hornets came back to tie the game at 1-1 with a run in the second inning. Olivet went ahead 2-1 on an RBI-double by senior Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena) in the third inning. It was his 14th double of 2012, which ties the single-season school record. Beau Locker (2003) and Brandon Goodman (2008 and 2009) also hit 14 doubles.
Kalamazoo took the lead for good in the fifth inning when Drew Ordakowski hit a three-run home run. The Comets had the bases loaded in the seventh, but the only run they scored was on a sacrifice fly by Clark.
Olivet recorded six hits in the game, with six different players each collecting one. Junior Jay Magro (Bridgman) suffered the pitching loss, yielding six runs (four earned) on eight hits over six innings.
In the second game, the Comets left a runner stranded at third base in both the first and second innings. The Hornets would score the only runs they need in the bottom half of the third inning. Olivet brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the seventh, but failed to score.
The Comets finished the game with six hits. Freshman Drew Thompson (Canton/Plymouth) went 3-for-4, while three others had one hit apiece. On the mound, senior Sean Alexander (Fenton) went the distance on the mound to tie Olivet's single-season record with his seventh complete game of the season. He allowed the two runs on seven hits.
