Baseball team falls to NCAA Division I foe Oakland, 23-7
The Olivet College baseball team fell to NCAA Division I foe Oakland University, 23-7, today at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Olivet College baseball team fell to NCAA Division I foe Oakland University, 23-7, today at the OU Baseball Field in Rochester.
The Grizzlies scored at least two runs in every inning except the third, while the Comets scored three runs in the sixth and four runs in the eighth. The big hit in the sixth inning for Olivet was a two-run double by senior Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena). Senior Tyler Olinske (Negaunee) also had an RBI-groundout.
In the eighth, freshman Tom Kort (New Hudson/South Lyon) drew a bases loaded walk to bring in the first run. Off a batted ball by sophomore Andrew Engle (Greenville), the Oakland third baseman misplayed the ball and allowed two runs to cross the plate. Freshman Drew Thompson (Plymouth/Canton) capped the scoring with an RBI-single.
For the game, Olivet recorded 11 hits. Engle was 2-for-3 with one run scored. Freshman Peter Panos (Davison) also had two hits. Six pitchers combined to allow the 23 runs (22 earned) on 21 hits.
The Comets can now focus on their four-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) series against Trine (Ind.) University this weekend. On Saturday, the teams will play a doubleheader at Trine's Jannen Field and then on Sunday, the series moves to Olivet's Cutler Athletic Complex for the final two games. Both doubleheaders will start at 1 p.m.
