ALMA, Mich. – Behind complete game pitching performances by junior Jay Magro (Bridgman) in game one and senior Sean Alexander (Fenton) in game 2, the Olivet College baseball team opened its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule by sweeping a doubleheader, 2-1 and 2-0, at Alma College today at Klenk Park in Alma. Olivet will go for the four-game series sweep tomorrow when it hosts Alma for two games at the Cutler Athletic Complex, beginning at 1 p.m.

In the opener, Magro held the Scots to the one unearned run on four hits. The Comets scored the only runs they would need in the first inning. Freshman Aaron Kreiger (South Haven) led off the game with a single. He moved to second on a groundout and advanced to third on a single by junior Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western). Junior Andrew Brawley (Niles) delivered a single to score Kreiger and move Young to second base. An error then allowed Young to score the second run. Alma scored its only run in the sixth.

In the nightcap, junior Justin Pitt (Imlay City) scored both Olivet runs. The first one came in the fifth inning when he reached base on a single and later scored on an error by the Scot third baseman. The second one was in the seventh inning when Pitt had a single, stole second base and scored on a single from senior Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena).

Alexander was brilliant on the mound, as he scattered six hits in seven innings. He struck out six batters and walked zero batters. Like the first game, the Comets were held to four hits, two each by Clark and Pitt.

Following tomorrow's doubleheader, Olivet will play a MIAA series next week against Calvin College. Thursday's doubleheader will be played at Calvin, starting at 2 p.m., while Saturday's games will be played in at Olivet, starting at 1 p.m.
