Baseball team beaten by New England, 9-5
The Olivet College baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision to New England (N.H.) College today at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team dropped a 9-5 decision to New England (N.H.) College today at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
New England led 5-0 behind single runs in the first, third and fourth innings and two runs in the fifth inning. Olivet got on the scoreboard in the bottom half of the fifth when sophomore leftfielder Jonny Zawacki (Alpena) walked and scored on a double by junior shortstop Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western).
After the Pilgrims scored a run in the top half of the sixth, the Comets answered with two runs in their half of the sixth. New England stretched their lead to 9-3 with a three-run eighth inning. Olivet scored twice in the eighth but could not get any closer.
The Comets out-hit the Pilgrims, 10-9. Young led the way, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Freshman second baseman Tom Kort (New Hudson/South Lyon) had two hits. Four Olivet pitchers combined to allow the nine runs (six earned). Junior Kyle Fisher (Vermontville/Maple Valley) was charged with the loss, as he allowed the first three runs on two hits in three innings.
The Comets return to the field tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. when it plays Salve Regina (R.I.) University.
