Baseball team gets first win of season, defeats Kenyon, 11-9
The Olivet College baseball team got its first win of the 2012 campaign, defeating Kenyon (Ohio) College, 11-9, today in the second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Olivet College baseball team got its first win of the 2012 campaign, defeating Kenyon (Ohio) College, 11-9, today in the second day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
After the Lords scored two runs in the top half of the first inning, the Comets answered with three runs in their half of the first. Sophomore leftfielder Jonny Zawacki (Alpena) scored the first run when junior designated hitter Andrew Brawley (Niles) hit a sacrifice fly. Freshman first baseman Joey Myers (Holt) then hit a RBI single to plate junior shortstop Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) and senior catcher Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena) hit a run-scoring single to score Myers.
Kenyon came back to take a 4-3 lead with two runs in the third. Olivet regained the lead at 6-4 with three runs in the fourth. In the frame, the Comets hit three doubles, including one by senior third baseman Tyler Olinske (Negaunee) to score the first run and another by Zawacki to score the second run. Junior Justin Pitt (Imlay City) ripped a single to score the third run. The Lords got one run back in the sixth inning and tied the game with another run in the top half of the seventh.
Olivet took a 9-6 lead when Zawacki hit a bases clearing triple in the seventh frame. The Comets stretched their lead to 11-6 on a two-run double by Clark in the eighth. Kenyon scored three runs in the ninth inning.
For the game, Myers, Zawacki and freshman second baseman Tom Kort (New Hudson/South Lyon) each went 3-for-5 and scored two runs. Zawacki collected four RBI, while Clark had two hits and three RBI.
Senior Sean Alexander (Fenton) started on the mound and went the first six innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on 11 hits. He struck out six and walked only one. Pitt threw an inning of relief to pick-up the win, while Brawley threw the final two innings to earn the save.
The Comets will play New England (N.H.) College tomorrow afternoon. Game time at Terry Park is noon.
