FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The University of Olivet men's volleyball team was swept in a pair of matches on day two of the Marian University (Wis.) Sabre Classic. The Comets fell to Westminster College (Mo.) and the host school.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Westminster defeated Olivet 25-16, 25-19, 25-22
- Location: Sadoff Gymnasium; Fond du Lac, Wisconsin
- Records: Olivet 1-6 overall, Westminster 9-2 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first set, the Comets led 5-4 before the Bluejays went on a 10-1 run to gain a 14-6 lead. Westminster held the advantage for the remainder of the set, winning it by a 25-16 score.
- Olivet built a four-point cushion, 8-4, in the second set. The Comets continued to lead until the Bluejays scored four straight points to turn a 10-7 deficit into an 11-10 lead. Olivet evened the score, but Westminster answered with three points to go up 14-11. The Comets fought back to tie the score at 16-16. After another deadlock at 17-17, the Bluejays closed the set by scoring eight of the final 10 points of the set.
- Olivet led 3-1 in the third set. Westminster answered with a 5-1 spurt for a 6-4 lead. The Comets came back to tie the score twice at 7-7 and 8-8. The Bluejays strung together a 6-2 run to go ahead 14-10. Olivet battled back to narrow the gap to a single point, 19-18. Westminster maintained the advantage for the rest of the set.
FOR THE COMETS
- Freshman Hayden Olson recorded a team-leading eight kills, followed by sophomore Silas Martin with six.
- Olson also registered six blocks (one solo and five assisted).
- Freshman Austin Chamblee dished out a team-high 15 set assists.
- Senior Matthew Tollar notched a team-best in digs with five.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The early part of the opening set was close, as neither team led by more than two points. After a 9-8 score, the Sabres went on a 9-1 run to take control of the set. Marian won the set by a 25-13 score.
- The second set was close for the duration of it, as there were multiple tied scores and lead changes. Olivet held a 17-16 lead before Marian used two kills and a Comet attack error to go up 19-17. Olivet trimmed its deficit down to a point, 22-21, but did not get any closer. The Sabres posted a 25-22 victory.
- In the third set, the Comets led 2-1 until Marian recorded a 4-0 spurt. The Sabres did not relinquish their lead for the rest of the set.
FOR THE COMETS
- Martin tallied eight of the 24 Olivet kills.
- Freshmen Jared Carter and Alex Temple each had five kills.
- Chamblee collected 16 set assists.
- Junior Andy Hok topped the defense with five digs.
UP NEXT
- The Comets host Davenport University for an exhibition match next Tuesday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. Olivet then travels to Grove City, Pennsylvania, next Friday and Saturday, February 6-7, to participate in the GCC Quad. On Saturday, the Comets play Mount Aloysius College (Pa.) at 5:30 p.m., and on Saturday, they face the host Wolverines at 10 a.m., and Randolph (Va.) College at 2 p.m.
