Volleyball team opens MIAA play with win at Saint Mary’s (Ind.)
The Olivet College volleyball team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play tonight with a 25-30, 30-28, 30-23, 21-30, 15-9 win over Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College at the Angela Athletic Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The win snaps the Comets’ seven-match losing streak.

Three Olivet (2-7, 1-0 MIAA) front row players finished the match with double digit kills. Senior Katie Schaum (Marshall) led the way with 17, followed by freshman Sydney Kuipers (Charlotte) with 15 and freshman Theresa Martin (Charlevoix) with 13. Kuipers had three attack errors in 40 attempts for a team-high .300 hitting percentage.
At the service line, the Comets tallied 10 aces, including five by Schaum and four by junior Kara Brinker (North Branch). Schaum also led the defense with 23 digs. Sophomore Jessica Petkus (Milford) and Kuipers were next with 19 and 16, respectively. Petkus topped the team with 53 set assists.
Olivet is next in action Thursday, Sept. 15, when it hosts Madonna University in their home-opener. Action from the Upton Center begins at 7 p.m.
