Wrestling team loses to Michigan State, 40-0
In its final dual match of the 2013-14 season, the Olivet College wrestling team fell to Michigan State University, 40-0, today at Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – In its final dual match of the 2013-14 season, the Olivet College wrestling team fell to Michigan State University, 40-0, today at Jenison Field House in East Lansing.
Despite the shutout loss, there were three close matches. At 141 pounds, senior Justin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) dropped a 6-3 decision. The difference in the bout was the Spartan wrestler scored a reversal and two-point near fall to ride out Holm for the entire second period.
At 149 pounds, senior Gage Pederson (Hastings) lost a 4-2 overtime decision. He earned an escape in the first two seconds of the second period before the Michigan State wrestler took him down. Pederson got another escape point in the final seconds of the frame to tie the bout at 2-2. After there was no scoring in the final period, the Spartans won the bout with a takedown in the first overtime period.
At 184 pounds, senior Jeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) fell 1-0. The Spartan wrestler scored the only point of the match on an escape to start the middle period. Holm chose to go neutral to start the third period, but neither wrestler was able to generate any points.
The Comets return to the mats tomorrow when a group of wrestlers compete at the 2014 Mid-States Conference Tournament. Wabash (Ind.) College is hosting the tournament at Chadwick Court in Crawfordsville, Ind., and action starts at 9 a.m. Admission is free of charge.
