Wrestling team beats Alma, 28-10
In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, the No. 9 Olivet College wrestling team defeated #25 Alma College, 28-10, this evening before a capacity crowd at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. – In a battle of nationally-ranked teams, the No. 9 Olivet College wrestling team defeated #25 Alma College, 28-10, this evening before a capacity crowd at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. Olivet won seven-of-10 bouts, recording two pins, one major decision and four minor decisions.
Starting the match at 133 pounds, senior Henry McKeown (Bellevue/Olivet) scored a takedown in the second period to win 6-4. Senior Justin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) followed with a 9-1 major decision win at 141 pounds. Senior Gage Pederson (Hastings) pushed the Comets' lead to 13-0 when he pinned Cody Sullivan with 53 seconds left in the third period of the 149-pound bout.
The Scots put seven team points on the scoreboard with an 11-6 win at 157 pounds and 10-1 major decision at 165 pounds. Junior Nick Allen (Scotville/Mason County Central) used a takedown late in the second period to pull out a 4-2 win at 174 pounds.
Senior Jeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) posted an 11-5 win at 184 pounds to extend Olivet's lead to 19-7. In the most exciting match of the night, sophomore Thomas Hall (Fife Lake/Forest Area) recorded a 3-1 overtime win against Jared Groenveld at 197 pounds. Both wrestlers earned escape points when they had the choice to start the second and third period before Hall scored a takedown around the midway point of the extra period.
Junior Trevor Timmreck (Birch Run) lost a close 4-1 decision at 285 pounds. Senior Robbie Bidlingmaier (Chesterfield Township/Anchor Bay) capped Olivet's win with a pin only one minute and 59 seconds into the 125-pound bout.
The Comets are now off until Saturday, Jan. 25, when they participate in the University of Wis.-Whitewater Border Brawls. Action starts at 11 a.m. CST.
