Wrestlers upended by Eastern Michigan, 23-9
The Olivet College wrestling team fell to Eastern Michigan University, 23-9, this evening at the Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti.
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Olivet College wrestling team fell to Eastern Michigan University, 23-9, this evening at the Bowen Field House in Ypsilanti.
The match started at 157 pounds, where senior Kyle Witgen (Romeo) dropped a 14-6 major decision to Brandon Zeerip. The Eagles stretched their lead in the team score to 7-0 with a 10-4 decision by Austin Geerlings over junior Dan Fleet (Ada/Lowell) at 165 pounds.
In the next bout at 184 pounds, junior Nick Allen (Scotville/Mason Country Central) used a reversal in third period and the riding time point to sneak past Jake Davis, 3-2. Anthony Abro got those three team points back when Anthony Abro beat senior Jeff Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek), 7-3, at 184 pounds.
Sophomore Thomas Hall (Fife Lake/Forest Area) and junior Ryan Steverson (Lake Odessa/Lakewood) suffered shutout losses at 197 and 285 pounds, respectively to push EMU's lead to 17-3. Freshman Kyle Gillies (Westland/John Glenn) lost 8-1 at 125 pounds.
Vincent Pizzuto secured the Eagles' win with a 10-4 victory over senior Michael Gancer (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) at 133 pounds. Senior Justin Holm (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) scored a takedown in the first period and two escapes in third period to beat Jacob Byers, 4-2, at 141 pounds. Senior Gage Pederson (Hastings) needed only a takedown halfway through the opening period for a 2-0 win over Michael Shaw at 149 pounds.
The Comets will now travel to the 2013 Desert Duals in Las Vegas. Their first match is Saturday morning at 8 a.m. PST against Coe (Iowa) College.
