Softball team beats Manchester (Ind.), 9-1 and 8-4; Lady Comets extend win streak to six games
The Olivet College softball team extended its winning streak to six games this afternoon at home with a doubleheader sweep against Manchester (Ind.) College. The Lady Comets won the first game, 9-1, in six innings and won the nightcap, 8-4.

Following a 1-1 tie in the first game, Olivet (12-10) exploded for six runs on seven hits in the fifth inning. In the inning, four different Comets drove in a run. Olivet forced the mercy ending with two runs with one out in the sixth.
At the plate, senior Kim Horanburg (Grand Ledge High School) collected three hits with two runs scored and two RBIs. Seniors Jenna Little (Ortonville Brandon High School) and Taneisha Pointer (Lansing Everett High School) and junior Jenn Newland (Tekonsha High School) were credited with two hits apiece. Senior Theresa Flowers (Waterford Kettering High School) also drove in two runs. Freshman Heather Hinesman (Hudson High School) had the lone Olivet extra base hit, a RBI double to start the scoring in the fifth.
Sophomore Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) pitched a complete game, six-hitter. She allowed an earned run, struck out two batters and did not walk a batter.
In the nightcap, the Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After two outs had been recorded in the second inning, Olivet added four runs in the second inning. Manchester (9-15) tallied a run in third inning. The Comets matched that run in the sixth. The Spartans closed the scoring with three runs in the seventh.
Horanburg was four-for-four with two singles, a double, a triple, three runs scored and a RBI. Senior Kari Munson (Lansing Eastern High School) had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs and two runs. Flowers drove in two runs.
Newland earned the win in the circle after pitching the first four innings. She allowed three hits, an unearned run and struck out three. In relief, sophomore Carrie Abbott (Bad Axe High School) tossed three effective innings and picked-up the save. She allowed six hits and three earned runs.
The Comets will resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play next Tuesday, April 13, at home against Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 3:30 p.m.
