Softball team sweeps Adrian, 9-0 and 8-3; Anderson throws one-hitter in first game
The Olivet College softball team swept Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader from Adrian College, 9-0 and 8-3, this afternoon in Olivet. In the first game, sophomore Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) tossed a one-hitter.

The Olivet College softball team swept Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader from Adrian College, 9-0 and 8-3, this afternoon in Olivet. In the first game, sophomore Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City High School) tossed a one-hitter.
The Lady Comets (10-10, 5-5 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 in the first inning. Olivet tallied four runs in the second and third innings. At the plate, senior Kim Horanburg (Grand Ledge High School) was three-for-three with four RBIs. Senior Kari Munson (Lansing Eastern High School) and juniors Jenn Newland (Tekonsha High School) and Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs High School) scored two runs apiece. Munson, Shunkwiler and senior Jenna Little (Ortonville Brandon High School) each drove in a run.
Anderson pitched five innings, allowing one hit and striking out four batters. In two starts this week, she has allowed five hits and zero runs in 11 innings of work.
After Adrian (5-12, 0-7) took a 1-0 lead in bottom half of the second inning, Olivet took advantage of three Bulldog (5-12, 0-7 MIAA) errors to score four runs in the third inning. The Comets scored single runs in the last four innings.
Senior Taneisha Pointer (Lansing Everett High School) was two-for-two, and senior Theresa Flowers (Waterford Kettering High School) also collected two hits. Munson had two RBIs. Horanburg, Little and juniors Lindsey Daniels (Galesburg Augusta High School) and Jill Shufelt (Millington High School) had a RBI apiece. Little, Newland and Shunkwiler scored two runs.
In the pitching circle, Newland went the distance, allowing five hits and three earned runs. She struck out seven batters.
The Comets will take a break from MIAA play tomorrow, April 9, when they host Manchester College for a non-league doubleheader, beginning at 2 p.m.
