UOlivet defeats Alma in three sets

ALMA, Mich. – The University of Olivet women's volleyball team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Alma College in three sets (25-17, 26-24, 25-13) this afternoon at Art Smith Arena.
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Scots jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set. The Comets erased their deficit with a 7-0 run to take an 8-6 lead. Olivet did not relinquish its advantage for the remainder of the set, winning it by a 25-17 score.
- The Comets opened the second set with four straight kills. Alma fought back and eventually gained its first lead of the set, 13-12. The teams traded points to keep the difference no more than one point. Olivet went ahead by four points, 23-19. A 5-0 Scot spurt made the score 24-23. A kill for freshman Hailey Day leveled the score, followed by a bump kill got the Comets to set point. Junior Julia Hall and senior Isabella Wagasy blocked down an Alma attack to hand the set to Olivet, 26-24.
- Behind sophomore Ashlynn Giannunzio's, the Comets scored seven straight points to begin the third set. Olivet held onto the lead for the rest of the set.
FOR THE COMETS
- For the match, Olivet pounded 46 kills and posted a .206 attack percentage.
- Freshman Payton Smith led all players with 20 kills, which is the second-most in UOlivet history in a three-set match. She also hit at a .293 clip.
- Day was next with nine kills, followed by Wagasy with five.
- Junior Julia Hall recorded seven blocks (one solo and six assisted), which is also the second-most in school history for a three-set match.
- Junior Kaylee McDaniel served three of the six Comet aces.
- Senior Jaydn Cary registered a match-high 21 digs, while Giannunzio had 12.
- Sophomore Jordyn Smith tallied 37 set assists.
