UOlivet downs Grace Christian in straight sets

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Olivet women's volleyball team upended Grace Christian University in straight sets tonight at the Aldrich Athletic Center.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Olivet defeated Grace Christian 25-17, 25-19, 25-18
- Location: Aldrich Athletic Center; Grand Rapids, Michigan
- Records: Olivet 7-13 overall, Grace Christian 9-8 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Tigers led by two points, 5-3, in the first set. Olivet answered with three straight points for a 6-5 lead. Grace Christian countered with two straight points before another 3-0 Comet run made the score 9-7. The teams traded mini runs to create three tied scores. After the third one, Olivet used a 5-0 spurt to take its largest lead of the set. The Comets held an advantage for the remainder of the set.
- In the second set, the Tigers led 2-1. Olivet responded with a 4-0 run to take a 4-2 lead. Grace Christian eventually came back to even the score at 14-14 and 15-15. Two points put the Comets ahead and they did not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set.
- The start of the third set was like the second, with Olivet holding an early 4-2 lead. The difference was that the Comets never let the Tigers come back to tie the score. Olivet's largest lead of the set was six points.
- For the match, the Comets posted a .172 attack percentage compared to .052 for Grace Christian. Olivet also had a 46 to 19 edge in total kills.
FOR THE COMETS
- Junior Julia Hall slammed down a match-best 10 kills.
- Freshman Payton Smith was next with nine kills, followed by junior Ellie Baynes and senior Violet Porter with six apiece.
- Sophomore Jordyn Smith and junior Abby Chapman split time at setter, dishing out 20 and 12 assists, respectively.
- Senior Jaydn Cary topped the defense with 13 digs.
- Payton Smith and sophomore Ashlynn Giannunzio each tallied nine digs.

- The Comets' next match is on Saturday at Alma College. The first serve at Art Smith Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m.
