Women’s tennis team defeats Heidelberg, 8-1

The Olivet College women's tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with an 8-1 victory over Heidelberg (Ohio) University today at the Port Royal Racquet Club in Hilton Head, S.C.

The Comets started the match by winning three doubles matches. At No. 1, freshman Caitlin LaValley (Battle Creek/Pennfield) and sophomore Giana Guerra (Lansing/Waverly) won 8-3. At No. 2, senior Celeste Gruber (South Haven) and sophomore Kelsey Singer (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) posted an 8-5 win. At No. 3, sophomore Jenna Baker (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and junior Leanne Scudder (St. Joseph/Lakeshore) recorded an 8-4 victory.

Olivet won 5-of-6 singles matches in straight sets. LaValley and sophomore Paige Sedgewick (Lennon/Powers Catholic) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 and No. 6, respectively. Guerra and Singer had the reverse, winning 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 and No. 4, respectively. Gruber won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3.

The Comets will conclude their spring break trip with a noon match tomorrow against Young Harris (Ga.) College.
