The Olivet College women’s tennis team opened the 2007 season with a 5-4 win against Grace (Ind.) College this afternoon at the Michigan State University Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
The Olivet College women's tennis team opened the 2007 season with a 5-4 win against Grace (Ind.) College this afternoon at the Michigan State University Indoor Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
The Comets earned two points in doubles play as the No. 2 and 3 tandems won. The No. 2 team of seniors Mallory Bailey (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) and Rachel Vilums (Hudsonville) easily won, 8-0. The No. 3 team of seniors Corey Jager (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) and Lindsey Struble (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) rallied from three games down to pull out an 8-6 win.
Olivet gained the victory by winning three-of-six singles matches. At No. 1, Vilums claimed a straight set, 6-1, 6-3, victory. At No. 6, Struble won the first set, 6-3, lost the second set, 6-2, and won the third set, 7-6, on a 7-4 tiebreaker. At No. 4, junior Abbie Utberg (Commerce Twp./Walled Lake Central) lost only two games and won, 6-1, 6-1.
The Comets are back in action Sunday, March 4, when they play Meredith (N.C.) College at 8 a.m. This match is the first of three on Olivet's spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C.
