Men’s and women’s swimming/diving teams sit in fifth and seventh after second day of MIAA Championships
The Olivet College men's and women's swimming/diving teams are in fifth- and seventh-place after the second day of the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships at the Jenison High School Aquatic Center.
JENISON, Mich. – The Olivet College men's and women's swimming/diving teams are in fifth- and seventh-place after the second day of the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships at the Jenison High School Aquatic Center. The third day of competition is tomorrow. Preliminaries get under way at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 5:30 p.m.
Men
After seven events, Olivet has 137 total points, which is 41 more than sixth-place Alma College. Kalamazoo College leads the way with 299 points.
Troy Wilkins (Lansing/Everett) scored 388.85 points on the one-meter diving board, which was enough for a third-place finish.
In swimming events, Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) turned in Olivet's best performance, as he placed fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.09 seconds. The time is a lifetime best for him and the fourth-best mark in school history.
Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/San Vicente de Paul) finished in sixth-place in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:57.77. Jimmy DeRupa (Trenton) and Korey Mervenne(Jenison) were 11th (4:51.77) and 12th (4:52.28), respectively in the 500 freestyle. DeRupa'stime was a lifetime best in the event.
The Comets recorded fifth-place finishes in both the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. On the freestyle relay were Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns), DeRupa, Eric Dawdy (Holt) and Ben Aldrich, and they finished in 1:25.96. On the medley relay were Nick Edgar(Lansing/Everett), Adam Rhein (Leonard/Romeo), Aoun and DeRupa, and their time was 3:32.08.
Women
The Comets have 99 total points and trail sixth-place Saint Mary's (Ind.) College by only two points. Calvin is first with 232.5 points.
The 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays both scored sixth-place points. Swimming on the freestyle relay were Jana Blodgett (Sturgis), Katie Dobis (Munster, Ind.), Kira Gates (Grosse Ile) and Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) and their time was 1:41.53. Dobis,Gates, Kristin Long (Pemberville, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) and Johnson swam on the medley relay and they finished in 4:16.75.
Individually, Johnson had the top performance, finishing fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.00 seconds. Long was 11th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.32. Gatesplaced 16th in the 500 freestyle, touching the wall in 5:24.09.
