OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Jenna Mayle (Ionia) headed in the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to lead the Olivet College women's soccer team to a 4-3 win over Trine (Ind.) University this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Thunder took an early 1-0 lead at the 10:05 mark before the Comets answered three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead. The first goal came eight minutes later when freshman Kelsey Dietzen (Lansing/East Lansing) headed the ball into the net off a corner kick by senior Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton).
Olivet took a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute when junior Nicole Borek (Holt) blasted in a free kick from 35 yards out. The Comets added their third goal in the 35th minute. Borek had a free kick from almost the same spot she scored from. Her shot clanged off the far post, where junior Brooke Leach (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley) gathered the rebound and sent a shot into the goal. The score stayed 3-1 at halftime.
Trine made the score 3-2 only four minutes and 25 seconds into the second half. The Thunder appeared to have scored the game-tying goal five minutes later but the goal scorer was called for being off-sides. Trine did break through and scored the equalizer in the 65th minute.
After there was no more scoring, the game went into overtime. The Thunder had a chance to score early in the extra period but their shot was saved. Olivet gained possession and earned a corner kick. Borek served the ball into the box, and Mayle headed the ball into the net at the far post.
The Comets had an 18-12 advantage in total shots. The teams were nearly equal in shots-on-goal, with Olivet holding a 10-9 edge. Borek, Dietzen, Winters and sophomore Emily Chrzasz (Livonia/Stevenson) each recorded three shots. Sophomore Deanna Zolnoski (Macomb/Henry Ford II) made six saves, while playing the whole game in goal.
