OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's soccer team defeated College of Mount St. Joseph (Ohio) University, 1-0, in its home- and season-opener this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
Senior Lindsey Winters (Plymouth/Canton) scored the Comets' only goal midway through the first half on a penalty kick goal. Sophomore Laura Vanderhoff (Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) was tackled just inside the 18-yard box on the far-side of the field, resulting in the PK. Olivet had several other good scoring chances, but was denied each time by the Lions' goalkeeper.
The Comets finished the game with a 20-7 advantage in total shots, with an 11-3 edge in shots on-goal. Winters led the way with six shots, placing half on frame. Sophomore Emily Chrzasz (Livonia/Stevenson) recorded four shots, including three on-goal. Sophomore Deanna Zolnoski (Macomb/Henry Ford II) provided the clean sheet in goal, making three saves.
Olivet is back in action tomorrow afternoon at noon when it hosts Millkin (Ill.) University, who defeated Albion College, 3-1, earlier today.
