Herrema named MIAA Wrestler of the Week
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The University of Olivet senior Tyler Herrema has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week. He is receiving this honor for a second time this season.
"I am super excited for Dash (Tyler)," said Olivet head wrestling coach Brandon Brissette. "As the year has progressed, he has been more confident in his chain wrestling, and it has shown lately in his matches. Dash will be in a chose match against another ranked individual, and before you know it, in one or two flurries, he has scored seven, eight or nine points and opens those matches up and blows away the opponent by the end. It was great to see that this weekend at a dual match event when the bonus points accounted for most of our big wins."
Wrestling at 149 pounds, Herrema won each of his three matches at the National Wrestling Coaches Association National Dual Meet Championships January 10-11 at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He defeated Duncan Detzell, ranked No. 13 nationally, from Central (Iowa) College, 18-3; Chase Fiser, ranked No. 12 nationally, from Loras (Iowa) College, 9-4; and Andrew Ross from Wabash (Ind.) College, 15-2. Herrema's wins helped Olivet defeat Central, 25-21, and Wabash, 31-14. The Comets finished 14th at the championships.
Olivet hosts Trine (Ind.) University on Thursday night for its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual match. The varsity matches from inside the Cutler Event Center get started at 7 p.m.
