Women’s golf team shoots course record and wins MIAA Playoff round #1
The women’s golf team used its home course to an advantage, winning the first of three MIAA playoff rounds today at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The school with the lowest cumulative total after the three rounds will receive the league’s automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships.
MARSHALL, Mich. – The Olivet College women's golf team used its home course to an advantage, winning the first of three Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) playoff rounds today at The Medalist Golf Club in Marshall. The school with the lowest cumulative total after the three rounds will receive the league's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Division III National Championships.
The Comets beat MIAA regular season champion Saint Mary's (Ind.) College by 12 strokes, 321-333. The 321 team score was a MIAA course record. Hope was third at 347, followed by Trine, 355; Albion, 365; Adrian, 373; Alma, 401; and Calvin, 414.
Olivet was consistent with junior Lauren Campbell (Fenton), freshman Theresa Damico (White Lake/Lakeland) and senior Abby Wheeler (Grayling) all sharing medalist honors with 80s. Campbell's round was a 41 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine. Damico shot a 37 on the front nine, including birdies on holes No. 1 and 8, and a 43 on the back nine. Wheeler had a 40 on the front and back nine.
Senior Amber Conrad (Battle Creek/ Harper Creek) finished with an 81, with a 42 on the front nine and 39 on the back nine. Her score placed her in a tie with two other golfers for fourth-place. Freshman Adrienne Jones (Redford/Thurston) rounded out the lineup with 84. With that score, all five Olivet golfers placed in the top 10 of the player standings.
The Comets will play in the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling this weekend, April 16-17, at the Ironwood Golf Course in Normal, Ill. The final two MIAA playoff rounds will be played April 29-30 at Saint Mary's home course, Blackthorne Golf Club.
