UOlivet opens home schedule with 49-48 win over North Park

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet women's basketball team hung on to beat North Park (Ill.) University, 49-48, in its home-opener this evening at the Cutler Event Center.
THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED
- There were four lead changes and one tied score in the first five minutes of the game. Olivet led by as many as five points, 15-10, when freshman Ava Lord made a three-pointer right before the first quarter buzzer sounded.
- The Comets used a 13-2 run in the first four minutes of the second quarter to gain their largest lead of the game, 28-12. The Vikings outscored Olivet, 7-3, over the next three and one-half minutes to trim their deficit down to 13 points. Neither team scored any points in the final three minutes of the period to keep the score, 32-19, at halftime.
- North Park began the third quarter with an 8-4 spurt to get the gap down to single digits. The Comets pushed their lead back to 11 points, 41-30, at the 1:51 mark. The Vikings ended the stanza with a 6-2 run to trail by seven points, 43-36, to start the fourth quarter.
- North Park scored the first eight points of the final period to take a 44-43 lead at the 5:52 mark. Olivet used a mini 6-0 run – two layups and two free throws by senior Kinsley Hatfield – to regain the lead, 49-44. The Vikings drained a three-pointer with 1:54 left to make the score 49-47.
- With 30.9 seconds remaining, North Park had a chance to tie the game but split two free throws. The Comets then had a chance to extend their lead at the free throw line but missed both attempts. After a timeout with five seconds left, the Vikings were unable to get a shot off.
FOR THE COMETS
- Junior Kaylee Bush led Olivet with 13 points.
- Hatfield finished with 11 points.
- Freshman Ava Lord added nine points.
- Junior Christina Malackanich grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.
- Freshman Madelyn Burdis dished out four assists.
