Women's basketball: Lang and Reid named to All-MIAA teams
Olivet College senior center Stefanie Lang and senior forward Carli Reid have been named to the 2014-15 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women’s basketball teams.
OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College senior center Stefanie Lang and senior forward Carli Reid have been named to the 2014-15 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's basketball teams. Lang is a first-team selection for a second straight year, while Reid is a second-team pick. All-league honors are based on a player's statistics during the 16-game MIAA schedule.
Under the direction of fifth-year Head Coach Nicole Burford, the Comets posted a 14-12 overall record and tied for fourth-place in the MIAA standings with a 9-7 mark. Olivet finished with a winning season for a third straight season and only the seventh time in the 37-year history of the program.
"Stefanie and Carli had another great year for us," said Burford. "They have been very consistent over the last two seasons and really put the team on their backs this year. We had a lot of new parts to put together this year and we knew they would be key in helping us to be in and position to finish top four in the conference.
"That's our goal every year, they know that, our kids know that if you play here, that's what we are working toward. So for us to be able to take our lumps this year and get that done at the end, we feel good about that. We are still moving in the right direction."
Lang all 14-of-16 games for the Comets and was the MIAA scoring (17.9 ppg) and rebounding (13.1 rpg) champion for a second straight year. She had 13 double-doubles against league opponents, scoring a league-best 33 points against Adrian College. Lang was second in blocks (37) and ninth in field goal percentage (.463).
For the entire 26-game schedule, Lang played in every game and led the team in scoring (17.8 ppg) and rebounding (12.4 rpg). She broke Olivet's single-season record with 49 blocked shots.
Lang recorded 20 double-doubles. Her single-game highs were the 33 points against Adrian and 20 rebounds against Kalamazoo College.
Lang finished an outstanding career in the Red and White. She ranks first all-time with 499 field goals made and blocks (109), second in scoring (1,208 points) and field goals attempted (1,006), and third in rebounding (772). Overall, she had 43 double-doubles in 69 games.
"Stefanie ends an amazing career here at Olivet with her name all over the record books," said Burford. "But I am just as impressed with her personal growth and wanting to be and grow as a leader over the last three years."
Reid averaged 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds in 16 MIAA contests. She scored a single-game high 23 points in both games against Saint Mary's (Ind.) College, and grabbed a single-game high 11 rebounds against Hope College. Her 51.4 field goal percentage ranked fifth among MIAA players.
For the entire schedule, Reid scored 11.4 ppg and pulled down 6.3 rpg. She had a .543 field goal percentage, which ranks fifth for a single-season in school history. Reid ends a two-year career in a Comet uniform with 587 points and 331 rebounds.
"It has been a honor to coach Carli the last two seasons," said Carli. "She was one of our most coachable and most productive players since I have been here. I think last season she was a little overshadowed, but we do not have the success we had last year or this year without her."
