OLIVET, Mich. – Olivet College senior Chelsea Ciba (Olivet) has been named the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Co-Player of the Week for women's basketball. She is sharing the honor with Amy Newell from Trine (Ind.) University.
Ciba averaged 14.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0 steals in leading the Comets to two wins Dec. 28-29 at the Albion College Holiday Tournament. She had nine points and eight assists, while not committing a turnover in their first win, 83-70 over Manchester (Ind.) University. Ciba followed that performance with 20 points, four assists and six steals in the second win, 61-56 over Defiance (Ohio) College.
"I am very happy to see Chelsea honored this week," said Head Coach Nicole Burford. "She has worked extremely hard to get to a certain level she wanted to be this season. Chelsea has been one of our defensive leaders and has worked to be a stronger offensive player for us and since our season opening tournament she has done that! By far, Chelsea is one of the hardest working and prepared athletes our program has seen since I have been here at Olivet, so it is nice to see her achieve an honor such as this one. "
For the season, Ciba is second on the team in scoring at 14.8 points per game. She also has a team-leading 19 steals to go along with 57 assists and 41 rebounds.
The Comets (9-2, 2-1) resume MIAA play Saturday afternoon when they host Calvin College at 3 p.m.
