OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's basketball team was defeated by University of Chicago, 80-36, tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Maroons entered the game ranked No. 2 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
Olivet scored the first three points of the game on a three-pointer by sophomore Kelsey Campbell (Olivet). Chicago answered with a 10-0 run. The Comets came back with 12-4 to take a 15-14 lead. The run was capped by a three-pointer from junior Melissa Bageris (Milford). The Maroons outscored Olivet 20-2 to take over the final nine minutes and 14 seconds of the first half to take a 34-17 lead at the break. The 44-point margin of victory was Chicago's largest lead of the game.
Junior SoQuitta DeShazor (Flint/Hamady) was the only Comet in double figures with 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting. She also grabbed a team-leading six rebounds. Bageris, Campbell and freshman Deja Penn (Flint/Southwestern Academy) each scored six points with two 3-pointers apiece.
Taylor Simpson paced the Maroons with 17 points and six rebounds. Meghan Herrick contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.
Olivet returns to the court Saturday when it plays at #4 Calvin College. Tip-off at Van Noord Arena in Grand Rapids is 3 p.m.
