Career-highs from Brown and Federau lead women’s basketball team to 70-50 win over Marygrove
Senior Emily Brown (Muskegon/Mona Shores) scored a career-high 25 points and junior Gabrielle Federau (Okemos) posted career-highs in points (20) and rebounds (21) to lead the Olivet College women's basketball team to a 70-50 win over non-conference foe Marygrove College.
Senior Emily Brown (Muskegon/Mona Shores) scored a career-high 25 points and junior Gabrielle Federau (Okemos) posted career-highs in points (20) and rebounds (21) to lead the Olivet College women's basketball team to a 70-50 win over non-conference foe Marygrove College this afternoon at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.
The first half was a back-and-forth affair with three tied scores and six lead changes. After Olivet (6-6) took a six-point lead, 22-16, with 2:46 left before halftime, Marygrove (1-15) went on a 10-0 run to re-gain the lead at 26-22. The Mustangs settled for a two-point lead, 26-24, at the break after Federau made a layup in the closing seconds of the half.
Marygrove led for the last time at the 12:51 mark of the second half. A three-pointer from the top of the key by Brown put the Comets ahead for good at 38-37. The 20-point margin of victory was their largest lead of the game, as the Mustangs were held to just one point in the final four minutes and four seconds of the game.
Brown made 11-of-16 baskets, including the one three-pointer, and two free throws for her 25 points. Federau drained 10 baskets, grabbed 11 offensive rebounds and 10 defensive rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season. Freshman Sam Keiffer (Brighton) was a spark off the bench with nine points and team-leading seven assists in 22 minutes. Sophomore Caitlin Thilo (Onondaga/Eaton Rapids) dished out a season-high six assists.
Ebony Jackson was the only Mustang in double figures with 21 points. Danielle Saddler had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Olivet will resume Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association play Wednesday, Jan. 7, when it travels to play Alma College at 7:30 p.m.
