Women’s basketball team rallies to beat Albion, 65-58, in first round of 2006 MIAA Tournament
The Olivet College women’s basketball team came from behind to beat Albion College, 65-58, tonight in the first round of the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at Kresge Gymnasium in Albion. With the win, the Comets (13-13) advance to Thursday night’s semifinals game at Hope College.
The Olivet College women's basketball team came from behind to beat Albion College, 65-58, tonight in the first round of the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Tournament at Kresge Gymnasium in Albion. With the win, the Comets (13-13) advance to Thursday night's semifinals game at Hope College who beat Kalamazoo College, 80-47.
Olivet also wins only its second conference tournament game in school history. That win was in 2003 when the Comets beat Kalamazoo, 78-74. The 2001 MIAA Tournament was the last time that the Britons (17-9) were eliminated in the first round.
In the first half, Albion led by as many as nine points on two occasions with the last time being 23-14 with just under eight minutes left. The Comets cut their deficit to two points at the 4:14 mark when junior Audrey Graham (Battle Creek/Lakeview) made a three-point basket. At halftime, the Britons held a 33-29 lead.
Albion took an eight-point lead, 43-35, with 13:52 left in the second half. Olivet went on a 14-5 run to take its first lead of the game, 49-48, at the 7:43 mark when sophomore Amy Brackenwagen (Grand Ledge) made a free throw. The Britons answered with a 10-4 run to go up by five points, 58-53, with 4:29 left in the game. From that point, Albion was held scoreless, while Olivet ended the game with a 12-point scoring spree, including six-of-six free throw shooting by junior Jen O'Neil (Auburn Hills/Avondale), for the victory.
The Comets had a balanced scoring attack with O'Neil scoring a team-high 14 points. Graham added 13 points, followed by sophomore Jaime Kowalczyk (Wyandotte/Roosevelt) and senior Gina Willard (Casnovia/Kent City) with 10 and eight points, respectively. Brackenwagen grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Albion placed three starters in double figures, led by Jessica Babcock with a game-high 17 points. Jaime Fornetti contributed 12 points and Kellyn Glynn added 10. Liz Marcuz pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
