UOlivet starts 2026 season with split in Kentucky

DANVILLE, Ky. – The University of Olivet softball team began its season by splitting two games at the Centre College Round-Robin Tournament. The Comets rallied to beat Asbury University (Ky.), 5-4, before losing to the host Colonels, 12-9.
THE BASICS

VS. ASBURY
- The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring one run in the first and two runs in the second inning. Olivet got two runs back in the bottom of second. The Comets seized a 4-3 lead when they pushed across two more runs in the third on RBI-double by sophomore Kyleigh Ramos and infield RBI-single by freshman Mia Thurman.
- Asbury tied the game with a run in the top of fourth. Olivet scored what proved to be the winning run. Junior Haylie Wenke hit an RBI-triple to score senior Corina Hernandez.
- The Eagles put one runner on base in each of the last three innings but failed to score any runs off freshman pitcher Elliot Jarvi.
- For the game, the Comets totaled 11 hits. Wenke was 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple. Hernandez and Thurman each tallied two hits. In the circle, Jarvi earned the win after throwing three scoreless innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out three.
VS. CENTRE
- Olivet took advantage of an error to plate two unearned runs in the top of first inning. The Colonels responded with a run in the bottom part of the inning. The Comets got that run back in the second inning.
- After Centre plated four runs in its half of the second, Olivet answered with six runs in their half of the third to go ahead, 9-5. The big hits of the inning were two-run singles by freshman Jo Ellen Holbrook and two-run ground out by Wenke. The Colonels scored seven unanswered runs – one in the fourth, four in the fifth and two in the sixth – to pull out the come-from-behind win.
- The Comets recorded only five hits in the game, including a 2-for-2 performance by sophomore Megan Cox. Hernandez scored three runs, while Wenke drove in three runs. Jarvi suffered the pitching loss, yielding five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks over two and two-third innings.

- Tomorrow, the Comets wrap-up play at the tournament. Olivet face Asbury at 10 a.m., followed by a game against Asbury.
