OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team suffered two shutout losses to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Calvin College, 2-0 and 8-0, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The first four innings of game was a pitcher's duel between Calvin's Lina Avila and Olivet senior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central). The Comets had base runners in each of the innings, and their best chance to score came in the third inning. Sophomore Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville) stole second base and then was thrown out at the plate on a single up the middle by sophomore Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley).
The Knights scored their first run in the fifth inning on a two-out double by Marie Prins. Calvin pushed across an unearned run in the sixth and capped its scoring with a solo home run from Prins in the seventh.
Olivet finished with five hits, including a 2-for-3 performance by sophomore Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic). Hurosky along with juniors Alison Iuelle (Kentwood/Kelloggsville) and Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) each had one hit. Cook was the losing pitcher, as she allowed the three runs on seven hits.
In the nightcap, the Knights scored three runs in the first, two runs in the second, one in the third and two in the fourth for their eight runs and end the game early because of the mercy rule. The Comets had a chance to score in the fifth inning when they left two runners in scoring position.
Olivet was held to three hits. Iuelle and junior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) each hit a double. Junior Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett) had the third hit, a two-out single through the left-side of the infield in the fourth inning. In the circle, freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) threw the first two innings, and gave up six earned runs on nine hits to be charged with the loss. Freshman Nicole McCoy (Detroit/Mumford) completed the game in relief, and yielded two unearned runs on three hits.
The Comets will travel down I-69 to play Trine (Ind.) University Thursday afternoon for another MIAA doubleheader, starting at 3:30 p.m.
