Softball team mercies Northland, 10-2, and Newbury, 26-2
The softball team won a pair of five-inning mercy rule ending games this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Comets, who now have a 7-1 record this season, defeated Northland (Wis.) College, 10-2, and Newbury (Mass.) College, 26-2.
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Olivet College softball team won a pair of five-inning mercy rule ending games this morning at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Comets, who now have a 7-1 record this season, defeated Northland (Wis.) College, 10-2, and Newbury (Mass.) College, 26-2.
Against Northland, Olivet batted around in the second inning and scored seven runs in the second inning. The Comets added another run in the fourth inning. After the Lumberjills scored a pair of runs in the top half of the fifth, Olivet pushed across three runs in the bottom half of the fifth.
The Comets ripped 14 hits with all but one starter recording at least one hit. Junior Nicole Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) was also 2-for-3 and scored twice.
Junior Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine) collected two hits, including a two-run double in the second. Other extra base hits were doubles by freshman Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and Sarah Mechem (Eaton Rapids) as well as sophomore Ali Lund (Owosso). Senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) reached base safely in all three of her plate appearances, twice by walks and once on a bunt single.
In the circle, sophomore Breanne Harmon (Quincy) improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete pitching performance. She scattered five hits and struck out nine in her five innings.
Against Newbury, Olivet nearly batted around twice in the first inning, scoring 14 runs. The Comets added four runs in the second and one in the third to take a 19-0 lead. Newbury pushed across one run in the bottom half of the third. Olivet got two runs back in the top of the fourth and Newbury added a single tally in the home half of the fourth. The Comets closed the scoring with a five-run fifth inning.
Olivet pounded out 26 hits in the victory. Coshow, Lund, Robbins and junior Bridget Lathers (Grass Lake/Lumen Christi) all collected three hits apiece. Maas had a single-game career-high five RBI, including a three-run home run. Robbins drove in four runs. Lund led the team with four runs scored. In the circle, junior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) earned the victory. She allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out three.
Tomorrow, the Comets will play New Jersey City University at 9 a.m. and SUNY-Potsdam at 11 a.m.
