For the third consecutive day, the Olivet College softball team has split two games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The Comets defeated Wheelock (Mass.) College, 14-4, in their first game, and fell to New Jersey City University (NJCU), 1-0, in their second game.
After Wheelock scored three runs in the top half of the first inning, the Comets pushed across 11 unanswered runs – three in the first, three in the second and five in the third. The Wildcats got one run back in the fourth, but Olivet scored three times in the bottom of the fourth. The game ended after five innings because of the eight-run mercy rule.
Olivet sent nine batters to the plate in each of the four innings. Senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and six stolen bases. Sophomore Cortney Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Hills) did not have an official at-bat, as she walked in each of her four plate appearances and scored a run each time.
Freshman Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett) had two hits and two RBI. Sophomore Mallory Schug (Climax/Galesburg-Augusta) recorded two hits, one double and three RBI. Junior Christine Daub (Hudson) was 1-for-2 with one RBI and three runs scored. Junior Katelyn Boss (Charlotte/Maple Valley) and sophomore Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) collected two RBI apiece.
In the circle, freshman Alyssa Snyder (Imlay) picked-up her first collegiate win, throwing a complete game, six-hitter. She allowed four runs (three earned), while striking out six and walking one.
The game between Olivet and NJCU was a pitcher's duel for six innings. The Comets had runners on second and third with one out in the third and sixth innings, but failed to score a run. The Gothic Knights got the only run they would need in the top half of the seventh on a leadoff home run. Olivet had the leadoff batter on base, but she was taken off the bases on a caught stealing.
Olivet was limited to just two hits – singles by Greene and junior Morgan Iloancaie (Port Huron/Imlay City). Greene was the losing pitcher, as she allowed just four hits and struck out eight batters.
The Comets will conclude their Spring Break tomorrow with a pair of games. Olivet will play Carroll (Wis.) University at 9 a.m., and St. Lawrence (N.Y.) University at 1 p.m.
