Softball team swept by Saint Mary's, 8-5 and 5-4
The Olivet College softball team was swept by Saint Mary’s (Ind.) College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Belles won the first game, 8-5, and then scored a run in the bottom of seventh to win the second game, 5-4.
The Olivet College softball team was swept by Saint Mary's (Ind.) The Belles won the first game, 8-5, and then scored a run in the bottom of seventh to win the second game, 5-4.
In game one, Saint Mary's took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first inning. Olivet got one back in the first and took a 3-2 lead with two runs in the second. The Belles scored six straight runs – three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the sixth – for an 8-3 lead. The Comets plated two runs in the bottom half of the seventh, but they would not get any closer.
Freshman Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) was the only Olivet player with more than one hit, as she went 2-for-3 with one RBI. Freshman Meg Wernowsky (Bellevue) hit a two-run single, and freshman Meghan Case (Vassar) had a pinch-hit single and scored a run. In the circle, sophomore Kelsey Greene (Burr Oak) went all seven innings and allowed eight runs on 14 hits, while striking out six.
In the second game, the Comets scored one run in the first and third innings. The Belles tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the third. Olivet immediately answered with a run in the top half of the fourth. Saint Mary's regained the lead at 4-3 with single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.
The Comets made the score 4-4 with a run in the seventh after Case singled. Freshman Tia VanWinkle (Parma/Western) came in to run for her. A ground out moved VanWinkle to second, and she came around to score on a two-out single by senior Jenny Robbins (Fenton). The Belles scored the winning run in the bottom half of the seventh.
Olivet posted eight hits in the game. Case and Robbins each had two hits and one RBI. Case had a single and double, while Robbins had two singles. Junior Morgan Iloncaie (Port Huron/Imlay City) reached base safely in 3-of-4 plate appearances, twice on walks and one base hit. Freshman Breanne Harmon (Quincy) made her first collegiate start, and gave up five runs on 11 hits. She struck out four and walked one.
The Comets will rest tonight and be back in tomorrow afternoon when they host FInlandia University for a non-conference doubleheader, beginning at 1 p.m.
