The Olivet College softball team fell to Alma College, 12-3, in the second game of a rescheduled Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader today at Scots Park in Alma. The first game was played April 10 before rain postponed the second game.
The Comets scored the first run of the game in the third inning. Junior Kacie Rosecrants (Parma/Western) reached first base on a fielding error by the Alma shortstop and scored on an error by the Alma leftfielder.
The Scots then sent 11 batters to the plate and erupted for six runs in the top half of the fourth. They added three more runs in the fifth to make the score, 9-1. Olivet kept the game alive by scoring a run in the bottom half of the fifth. Junior Cassie Bowerman (Quincy) singled, went to second on a walk to Rosecrants and advanced to third on a flyout off the bat of junior Heidi Wear (Hastings/Wayland Union). Junior Kacey Darling (Hartford) drove in Bowerman when she got to first base on a fielder's choice.
The Scots closed their scoring with a three-run sixth inning. The Comets managed to push across a run in the bottom half of the sixth, but it was not enough to force the game over after six due to the eight-run mercy rule. Freshman Courtney Praski (New Lothrop) was hit by a pitch to lead off the sixth. Sophomore Christine Cameron (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) laced a double to move Praski to third base. Bowerman then hit a single to score Praski.
Olivet finished with four hits, including two for Bowerman. Cameron, Rosecrants and junior Beth DeLora (Muskegon/Oakridge) each had a base hit. In the circle, freshman Katie Harper (Vassar) was credited with the loss.
The Comets will wrap-up the 2008 season Tuesday when it travels to play Rochester College at 3:30 p.m.
