Three players named to 2005 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Central Region softball teams
Three Olivet College student-athletes have been selected to the 2005 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region softball teams. Senior outfielder Jill Shufelt (Millington) and senior catcher Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs) were named to the first-team while senior shortstop Jenn Newland (Tekonsha) earned second-team honors.
Three Olivet College student-athletes have been selected to the 2005 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Central Region softball teams. Senior outfielder Jill Shufelt (Millington) and senior catcher Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs) were named to the first-team while senior shortstop Jenn Newland (Tekonsha) earned second-team honors. Shufelt and Shunkwiler now move to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-American ballot.
Shufelt led the Comets with a .432 batting average and 51 hits. She also had a .977 fielding percentage, committing only one error in 43 chances from her centerfield position. Shunkwiler hit .390 with a team-high 14 doubles and nine home runs for a .740 slugging percentage. Her nine home runs and 50 RBIs are new single-season school records. Newland ranked second on the team with a .408 batting average. She also tallied a team-high 53 hits and 35 runs scored.
Olivet finished the 2005 season with a 22-16 overall record and was fourth in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 11-5 mark.
