The softball team swept a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader at Saint Mary's (Ind.) College. The Lady Comets won the first game, 7-3, and came back to win the nightcap, 12-4.
In the first game, Olivet (19-11, 8-4 MIAA) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Lindsey Daniels (Galesburg-Augusta) doubled home senior Beth Shunkwiler (Berrien Center/Berrien Springs), who also hit a double. The Comets added four runs in the second, including three on a bases-clearing double by Shunkwiler.
The Belles (5-22, 0-14) made the score 5-3 with a run in the fourth inning and two more runs in the sixth inning. Olivet added two insurance runs in the seventh inning when Shunkwiler hit a two-run home run.
For the game, Shunkwiler was three-for-four with a pair of doubles and four RBIs. Kim Green (Portland) and Jenn Newland (Tekonsha) had two hits apiece. In the circle, junior Erica Anderson (Casnovia/Kent City) earned the win. She pitched a complete game, five-hitter while striking out five batters.
In the nightcap, Saint Mary's took a 3-0 lead after one-half inning. The Comets started off in similar fashion to game one as Daniels hit a double to score Shunkwiler. The Belles tacked on another run in the top of third inning. Newland answered that run with her first collegiate home run.
Olivet broke the game wide open with a seven-run fourth inning. The big hit of the frame was a grand slam home run by Shunkwiler. The Comets tacked on two unearned runs in the fifth inning. Green helped her own cause by ending the game with a two-our RBI-single in the sixth inning.
In the game, Olivet tallied 13 base hits, including two each by Daniels, Newland, Shunkwiler, Shannon Hall (Taylor/Truman), Jessica Schmansky (Clarkston/Waterford Our Lady of Lakes) and Jill Shufelt (Millington). Sophomore Heather Hinesman (Hudson) scored three runs after reaching base three times on a fielder's choice. Green picked-up the win after pitching six innings. She allowed six hits and two earned runs.
The Comets are next in action tomorrow when they host Tri-State (Ind.) University in a key MIAA doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Olivet has a one-game lead on the Thunder for fourth-place in the MIAA standings.
