UOlivet throwers compete at last chance meets
Fremeau breaks UOlivet records in discus and hammer
OLIVET, Mich. – Over the last week, a trio of The University of Olivet men's track & field student-athletes have competed at three different last chance meets in three different states. Last Friday, May 8, the trio traveled to Rock Island, Illinois, for the Augustana College Penultimate Qualifier. After a day off, they stayed in the state of Michigan on Sunday, May 10, for the Grand Valley Last Day Meet. Today, two participated in the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Final Qualifier.
At Augustana, junior Owen Fremeau won the discus throw with a UOlivet record performance at 177 feet, 4 inches. He also competed in the hammer throw and placed third (199 feet, 3 inches).
Sophomore Yrral Campbell recorded a personal-best mark of 156 feet, 7 inches in the discus to place fifth overall. Freshman Elijah Cottrell participated in the hammer and recorded a 114 feet, 7 inch mark.
At Grand Valley, Fremeau competed in the shot put and discus throw. He did not improve on his personal best marks in either event. Campbell improved on his personal best in the discus at 159 feet, 7 inches. Cottrell had a 122 feet, 10 inch mark in the hammer throw.
At La Crosse, Fremeau placed first in the shot put (58 feet, 9-1/2 inches) and hammer (201 feet, 9 inches) and was eighth in the discus (161 feet, 6 inches). The mark in the hammer breaks his own UOlivet record and the shot put mark was 1-1/4 inches less than his school-record mark of 58 feet, 10-3/4 inches. Campbell had a mark of 155 feet, 3 inches in the discus.
The official field for the 2026 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be posted tomorrow night on www.ncaa.com. The championships are next Thursday-Saturday, May 21-23 at Wisconsin-La Crosse. As of this writing at 9:30 p.m. on May 14, Fremeau is fourth in the hammer throw, and seventh in both the discus and shot put on the performance list.
