UOlivet's Fremeau selected MIAA Men's Outdoor Most Valuable Field Athlete
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The University of Olivet junior Owen Fremeau has been voted the 2026 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Outdoor Most Valuable Field Athlete.
For the third consecutive year, Fremeau captured the title in the hammer throw at the MIAA Field Day. This year, he broke both the UOlivet and MIAA Outdoor Championships record with a throw of 200 feet and 3 inches. Fremeau also repeated as conference champion in the shot put, posting a mark of 56 feet and 6-3/4 inches. He capped the championships with a seventh-place finish in the discus throw (147 feet, 2 inches).
"Owen had another outstanding MIAA Field Day performance," said Olivet head coach Karen Lutzke. "He continues to make improvements every meet and makes every competition exciting. (Throws) Coach (Daustin) Martin has done an outstanding job understanding what works for Owen in the ring and getting the best out of Owen every meet. We are looking forward to the next few weeks of competition to see what else Owen can achieve in 2026."
By virtue of winning this award, Fremeau sweeps the MIAA Field Athlete of the Year awards for the 2025-26 season. He also received it at the conclusion of the indoor season. Overall, Fremeau is a five-time All-MIAA selection after earning the honor twice indoors (2025, 2026) and now three times outdoors (2024, 2025, 2026).
He has won six events at the outdoor championships (hammer three times, shot put twice and discus once) and four events at the indoor championships (weight throw twice and shot put twice). This six wins at the outdoor championships matches Roy Thomas for the second-most in UOlivet history. Thomas won both mile and 2-mile races in 1906, 1907 and 1908. The most is seven by Jordon Brown.
Fremeau plans to compete on Friday at the Augustana (Ill.) College Twilight Meet and on Saturday at the Grand Valley State University Last Day Meet, and next week at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Last Chance Meet. He is currently ranked third in the hammer and seventh in the shot put on the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Performance List. The top 22 student-athletes in each event will advance to the NCAA Division III Championships on May 21-23 at Wisconsin-La Crosse.
