Chandler and Fremeau named 2025 All-MIAA First Team
FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – The University of Olivet sophomores DeVondre Chandler and Owen Fremeau have been earned 2025 All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) First Team honors for indoor track and field.
At the MIAA Championships, Chandler took first place in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6 feet, 8-1/4 inches. He entered the competition with the bar at 6 feet, 5 inches, and cleared it on his first attempt. Having secured the title, the bar was raised to 6 feet, 8-1/4 inches and Chandler got over it on his first try. The bar was moved up to 6 feet, 10-3/4 inches, so he could have three attempts at breaking the UOlivet indoor record but he failed to clear it. Chandler is now a three-time All-MIAA selection after also winning the high jump at the 2024 MIAA Indoor and Outdoor championships.
"DeVondre continues to impress me every time he high jumps," said Olivet head coach Karen Lutzke. "He has gained more confidence at the higher heights and consistently hits his personal best from last year in competitions. DeVondre is on the cusp of another big breakthrough. He does a great job making the adjustments that Coach (Darroll) Gatson and Coach (Joey) LeMere give him to work on to clear the higher bars."
At the MIAA Championships, Fremeau captured the MIAA title in the shot put and weight throw. He achieved UOlivet and MIAA championship records in both events – 55 feet and 7-1/2 inches in the shot put and 61 feet and 11-1/2 inches in the weight throw. His winning shot put mark was posted on his fifth throw and the winning weight throw was done on his first attempt.
"Owen has made tremendous progress this year," stated Lutzke. "Breaking two MIAA Championship records in one day is a huge accomplishment. Owen has been putting in the work in the weight room and the ring and it is paying off in a big way for him this year. Coach (Daustin) Martin has done a fabulous job of getting Owen ready for his competitions and the best is yet to come."
Chandler and Fremeau have likely qualified for the 2025 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships March 14-15 at the Golisano Training Center in Rochester, New York. On the NCAA performance list, Chandler is seventh in the high jump, and Fremeau is 10th in both the shot put and weight throw. The official selections for the NCAA Championships will be posted on ncaa.com on Sunday, March 9, at 7 p.m.
